In the wake of controversy surrounding Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s untimely, court-ordered release of a the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald, one activist group is calling for defunding the entire police department.
On MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” Thursday, Black Youth Project representative Breanna Champion pushed back on the assumption that Emanuel’s resignation was her primary goal:
But Chicago police officers deal with one of the highest murder rates in the United States.
An analysis by the Chicago Tribune notes that as of Friday, there have been 2,818 shootings in the city this year. A map of Chicago’s shootings in 2015 paints a more daunting image of the city’s violence epidemic:

“One of our major demands is that police be defunded and that that money used to fund police be used to fund black futures, and be used to fund our communities and things that we need.”Champion insisted to guest host Peter Alexander that Chicago police are receiving too much of the city’s budget and their funding should instead be invested in “black futures” and community initiatives she believes are a necessity.
