CLOSE TO HOME .....When is enough, enough ? Everything is offensive to someone. These people who want the mascot changed, would be better off channeling their efforts to something really constructive, instead of trying to change what has been in place for 70 years......

The Indian has been the mascot at a Council Rock high school since the district was formed in 1946, according to the district website.The school district itself is named for a large rock at the site of Bucks County Community College's campus in Newtown Township where Lenape Indians used to hold councils, or meetings.The district's first high school was located in the Richboro section of Northampton, then at the present site of Newtown Middle School in Newtown Township before it moved to its current location on Swamp Road in the same township.Council Rock High School became Council Rock High School North when Council Rock South opened in Northampton in 2001. PETITION TO REMOVE

Keeping the Indian as the mascot for Council Rock High School North in Newtown Township is offensive and perpetuates racial stereotypes, according to an online petition that has drawn close to 700 signatures. 

"And tomahawk chops and war cries by fans and marching bands are racist as well," reads the petition asking for a change. "If we had an animal or object for a mascot, than all students and members of the community would be able to use our mascot's imagery to create school pride."

Not so, counters another petition in favor of keeping the mascot that has drawn more than 3,600 signatures.
