The Question That Explains Almost Everything

If you want to understand a human being or the human condition, what is the single most important question you should ask?
Most religious people would probably ask, "Do you believe in God?"
The most important question most secular people, especially progressives, could imagine asking is probably a policy question. Today it would be "Do you support Donald Trump?" Otherwise it might be "Do you support abortion rights?" or "Do you support gay marriage?"
As important as all of these questions are, in attempting to understand human beings, especially large groups of human beings -- i.e., their society -- the most important question to ask is "What in life gives you the most meaning?"
The answer does not explain everything, of course, but it explains the human condition better than any other question.
The reason is this: After food, the greatest human need and human desire is meaning. Even more so than the ability to reason or even to speak, this is the great divide between human and animal. We share all other needs with the higher animal species and share many needs with some of the lower animal species. Like them, we need food, shelter and companionship. But, while human beings seek and need meaning more than anything except food (and companionship -- but for human beings, companionship usually provides some meaning, and sometimes enough), no animal needs or seeks meaning. As an aside, this is one of the reasons I believe in God, the Creator. There is no evolutionary explanation for the need for meaning. Meaning is not a biological need.
Given its unique importance, that is why what gives us meaning must be deemed the most important question.
The problem, however, is that just as the need for food has no inherent moral quality, the need for meaning has no inherent moral quality. Meaning can be found in evil just as it can be found in good. Nazism provided millions of Germans with as much meaning as helping the dying in Calcutta provided Mother Teresa. Slaughtering infidels gives radical Islamic terrorists as much meaning as feeding the poor gives those who work for the Salvation Army. Killing the "Christ-killer" Jews gave some medieval Christians as much meaning as saving Jews gave some European Christians during the Holocaust.
For most Americans until the last generation, the need for meaning was filled by family, religion, community and patriotism (i.e., love of America and belief in America) as Abraham Lincoln put it: as "the last best hope of earth."
Whether the dems agree or not Trumps aggressive policies seem to be working. He may be rough, sometimes rude, but.....

Conventional Washington wisdom had assumed that an ascendant Beijing was almost preordained to world hegemony. Trump's tariffs and polarization of China were considered about the worst thing an American president could do.
The accepted bipartisan strategy was to accommodate, not oppose, China's growing power. The hope was that its newfound wealth and global influence would liberalize the ruling communist government.
Four years later, only a naif believes that. Instead, there is an emerging consensus that China's cutthroat violations of international norms were long ago overdue for an accounting.
China's re-education camps, its Orwellian internal surveillance, its crackdown on Hong Kong democracy activists and its secrecy about the deadly coronavirus outbreak have all convinced the world that China has now become a dangerous international outlier.
Trump courted moderate Arab nations in forming an anti-Iranian coalition opposed to Iran's terrorist and nuclear agendas. His policies utterly reversed the Obama administration's estrangement from Israel and outreach to Tehran.
Last week, Trump nonchalantly offered the Palestinians a take-it-or-leave-it independent state on the West Bank, but without believing that a West Bank settlement was the key to peace in the entire Middle East.
Trump's cancellation of the Iran deal, in particular, was met with international outrage. More global anger followed after the targeted killing of Iranian terrorist leader Gen. Qassem Soleimani.
In short, Trump's Middle East recalibrations won few supporters among the bipartisan establishment.
But recently, Europeans have privately started to agree that more sanctions are needed on Iran, that the world is better off with Soleimani gone, and that the West Bank is not central to regional peace.
Iran has now become a pariah. U.S.-sponsored sanctions have reduced the theocracy to near-bankruptcy. Most nations understand that if Iran kills Americans or openly starts up its nuclear program, the U.S. will inflict disproportional damage on its infrastructure -- a warning that at first baffled, then angered and now has humiliated Iran.
In other words, there is now an entirely new Middle East orthodoxy that was unimaginable just three years ago.

South Dakota becomes latest state to allow concealed handguns without permit By

South Dakota has become the latest state to remove permit requirements for gun owners to carry and conceal their weapons.
The state’s new Republican governor, Kristi Noem, signed SB 47 into law Thursday. The legislation permits residents to legally carry a firearm concealed on their person so long as they are allowed to possess one.
The bill passed the state Senate by a 23-11 vote and the state House by a vote of 47-23, reports said. In a tweet, Noem said the new law reflects the vision of the Founding Fathers and protects Second Amendment gun rights.
"Our Founding Fathers believed so firmly in our right to bear arms that they enshrined it into the Constitution," the governor tweeted. "This constitutional carry legislation will further protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding South Dakotans."
Democrats and law enforcement officials opposed the new law, calling for it to be limited to South Dakota residents, according to the Hill.
Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-control group, called the legislation dangerous and said it would have devastating effects, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
The National Rifle Association applauded the measure, calling it a “common sense measure that allows law-abiding South Dakotans to exercise their fundamental right to self-protection in the manner that best suits their needs."
South Dakota is the 14th state to remove the concealed carry permit requirement. Twenty-eight other states and the District of Columbia have a "shall-issue" system, which grants permits to those who pass background checks and other requirements.
One place in South Dakota where gun owners will not be able to carry their firearms is the Statehouse in Pierre. State senators voted 22-10 this week against a bill that would have let permit holders carry guns in the Statehouse and other state buildings.
Republican Sen. Stace Nelson, the bill’s sponsor, argued that Statehouse employees and lawmakers are at risk and that the Statehouse is not a secure facility.

“You don’t feel like you’re in America anymore,” said one observer.
A video published on YouTube over a year ago claimed that the Muslim population in Dearborn, Michigan, had reached almost 50 percent.
Life-long resident Brian demonstrated this point by driving a News Guru reporter to the east side of Dearborn. Brian said:
“You’ll see the culture shift where you won’t feel that you’re in the United States any longer.”
The change recorded on video was startling. Suddenly, every billboard and all commercial signage were written in Arabic. Buildings were adorned with Arabic architectural features, notably domed roofs. English letters spelled out “American Moslem Society” on the side of one building.
The video credited former U.S. President Barack Obama with taking in more Middle Eastern migrants than Mexico and Central American combined.
We know that some of these newly-arrived Muslims defrauded the Minnesota daycare and other public assistance programs a whopping $100 million a year. Whether they brought their money with them or robbed it from their unsuspecting host country, migrants are literally buying America out from under us.
“They come in to buy the strip mall. They move the previous owners out. They increase the rent dramatically to force people out. And then, they put similar businesses in but with an Arabic tone,” explained Brian.
Muslims are instructed by their religious leaders from birth to follow their faith which preaches subjugation of and death to the infidel.

New York Found a Way To Charge People for Looking at the Night Sky By Jared Harris, The Western Journal Published February 2, 2020
New York has discovered a way to charge people for looking at the night sky, and it looks like the state is taking full advantage of the new discovery.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is now offering a stargazing permit for those wanting to observe the night sky in a number of parks throughout the Empire State.
The state office released a pricing guide for the permits in December of 2019.
For anyone wanting to look at the cosmos in 2020, it’ll come with a hefty fee if they plan to use any of the listed New York state parks.
Residents of New York will pay $35 to look at the stars according to New York guidelines.

Nancy Pelosi was caught while speaking to an aide in what she thought was a private conversation at a fundraiser last night in Illinois.
But what she didn’t realize after she had left the stage was that the microphone clipped to her jacket was still on, making everything she said audible to the shocked and outraged audience…..and what she said revealed what kind of person she really is.
Pelosi had just delivered a rousing speech, promising the moon to potential donors and voters. Among her promises : full employment, peace on earth, free electricity supply to citizens, and a tax reduction down to 2%. These are all ridiculous proposals, of course.
None of this is within the power of any one politician, much less simply a member of the House, but that didn’t stop her from guaranteeing they would be become reality with her reelection. And the democrat audience ate it up, seeming to believe every word.
