USMCA Replaces NAFTA as Trump Delivers on One of Biggest Promises

MATTHEW BOYLE 1 Jul 2020

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement formally replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Wednesday, meaning that President Donald Trump has now officially completed one of the biggest promises of his insurgent 2016 campaign.

Commemorating the occasion, President Trump issued a lengthy statement laying out the success:

When I ran for President, I made a solemn promise to the American people that I would end the job-killing failure called the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and replace it with a better deal for our workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses—the men and women of Main Street who built the most prosperous and equitable economy in human history,” Trump said. “Today, with NAFTA ending forever and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) entering into full force, our grateful Nation pays tribute to America’s workers and celebrates their ability to overcome decades of bad deals and failed policies. The USMCA is the largest, fairest, and most balanced trade agreement ever negotiated and contains innovative provisions to help grow the economy and support American jobs. It is a tremendous victory for our manufacturers and autoworkers, meaning more cars and trucks will be produced in the United States. The USMCA is also a historic breakthrough for American agriculture. Canada will provide greater access for American dairy products, poultry, and eggs, and finally give fair treatment to American-grown wheat. In addition, the USMCA includes groundbreaking provisions to address digital trade, services, small business, and more, which will protect America’s competitive edge in technology and innovation.

Trump’s statement continued by thanking Congress for approving the deal, which it did with huge bipartisan majorities in both chambers. The USMCA passed the U.S. Senate last year 89-10, a sign of massive bipartisan support. Then, later, it passed the U.S. House 385-41, another strong bipartisan showing. Trump said:

The strong and overwhelming support the USMCA received from both parties in Congress—as well as from labor unions, business organizations, and champions of agriculture—shows just how much this trade agreement will benefit all Americans. Hundreds of thousands of jobs will be added to the economy,” Trump said. “The United States appreciates the efforts of our partners in Mexico and Canada to ensure that North America is strengthening its economic ties while working to combat the coronavirus pandemic. To mark this historic achievement, I look forward to welcoming President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico to the White House on July 8, 2020, to continue our important dialogue on trade, health, and other issues central to our regional prosperity and security.

Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary, issued her own statement as wel, praising the jobs that will be created as a result of the USMCA going into effect. She said:

Today, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will go into effect. Thanks to the bold leadership of President Trump, the agreement will mean stronger economic growth, more jobs for American workers, and fairer trade for our country. President Trump has delivered for American manufacturers, farmers, businesses, and workers. The agreement will drive job creation and includes the strongest, most advanced, and comprehensive set of labor provisions of any United States trade agreement. American farmers will have access to fairer markets in Canada and Mexico, opening up more opportunities to export their goods. USMCA will strengthen American manufacturing, including incentivizing investment in high paying auto manufacturing jobs here in the United States. Just as promised, President Trump is replacing the disastrous North American Free Trade Agreement, which drove American jobs overseas for years. USMCA is a fair deal for American workers and finally brings our trade relationship with Canada and Mexico into the 21st century.

The International Trade Commission estimates that the USMCA will create between 176,000 and 589,000 jobs in America. In automotive manufacturing alone, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office estimates, there will be another $34 billion in investments and 76,000 new jobs for Americans. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office also says that several restrictions from Canada on American dairy, wheat, and wine producers end as a result of USMCA as well.

House Conservatives Calls On Barr To ‘Immediately Begin Making Arrests’ Of Those Destroying Monuments  June 29, 2020  Martin Walsh

As protests across the country have continued for nearly a month, several historical monuments across the U.S. have been vandalized and, in some cases, destroyed.

President Donald Trump and many Republicans have called for swift action to stop the destructive acts.

In a press conference late last week, the House Freedom Caucus demanded that Attorney General Bill Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray apprehend and prosecute those involved in these property crimes, according to the Washington Examiner.

Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs, who chairs the caucus, stood outside of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., when he emphasized the “necessity of federal intervention when states and local jurisdictions allow the rights of their citizens to be violated, the public property to be attacked, vandalized, and destroyed.”

He went on to advise federal officials to “immediately begin making arrests of those who are attempting to violate rights and disturb our peace and vandalize our federal property and attacking our private property.”

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy echoed a similar message as Biggs.

“You don’t have liberty if you don’t have order,” Roy said, asserting that it is “time for the federal government to do its job and enforce the laws of the United States.”

What a coincidence: One day after activists bothered the mayor by protesting in front of her house, the "Cop free" autonomous zone is being retaken by the city.
 Sandy Malone   Rhe Police Tribune

Seattle, WA – Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order early Wednesday morning that declared the cop-free occupied zone around the Seattle Police Department’s East Precinct an “unlawful assembly” and called for immediate action to tear it down.

The move comes one day after the outraged mayor called for an investigation of a city councilwoman who led protesters to a demonstration in front of her house on Sunday.

Durkan’s order said her goal was to “restore public safety” to the six blocks dubbed the Capital Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP), formerly known as the Capital Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), NBC News reported.

Senator Tim Scott Rips Into Pelosi For Saying Republicans Killed George Floyd  By LifeZette | June 28, 2020

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Friday, telling Fox News Radio‘s “The Guy Benson Show” that her speech accusing the GOP of “trying to get away with…the murder of George Floyd” was “the most outrageous, sinful comment I’ve heard as a public official.”

He made this statement after an eloquent plea in the Senate subsequent to Democrats blocking his police reform bill.

Pelosi said of the GOP:

“For something to happen, they’re going to have to face the realities of police brutalities, the realities of the need for justice in policing, and the recognition that there’s many good people in law enforcement, but not all. And that we have to address those concerns. So, when they admit that, and have some suggestions that are worthy of consideration — but so far they were trying to get away with murder, actually — the murder of George Floyd.”

The woman is clearly unhinged.

Why Wasn't Pelosi Offended During Last 30 years?

Mark Levin:Why Wasn't Pelosi Offended Over Confederate Statues During Last 30 years? By Michael W. Chapman  June 11, 2020

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has been in Congress for more than 30 years and yet, during this time, she apparently never called for the removal of Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol. But she did on Wednesday, which prompted conservative talk radio host Mark Levin to ask why she didn't do it when Harry Reid (D-Nev.) or former KKK member Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) ran the Senate.

On Wednesday, June 10, Pelosi sent a letter to the Joint Committee on the Library, which oversees the statues in the Capitol. There are 11 statues of Confederate figures in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.

(Twitter.)

“As I have said before, the halls of Congress are the very heart of our democracy," wrote Pelosi. "The statues in the Capitol should embody our highest ideals as Americans, expressing who we are and who we aspire to be as a nation."

“Monuments to men who advocated cruelty and barbarism to achieve such a plainly racist end are a grotesque affront to these ideals,” said Pelosi. “Their statues pay homage to hate, not heritage. They must be removed.”

I’ve often wondered what generation of African Americans will ever, FINALLY figure out this ruse that’s been perpetrated against them?

History lesson as it really happened
Wow! It’s a shame & ultimately will be the demise of this Country, that these young entitled punks lead by poor leadership, progressive universities & Communist/Fascist news media...do not have the brains to learn the Real Truth!

And this is the absolute truth!

This should be sent out to as many people as possible...!!!

The Inconvenient Truth About the Republican Party

When you think of the Republican Party, what comes to mind? If you’re like many Americans, you may associate the GOP with racism, sexism, and general inequality. It’s a commonly pushed narrative by left-leaning media and academia, but as former Vanderbilt Professor of Political Science Carol Swain explains, the Republican Party was actually responsible for nearly every advancement for minorities and women in U.S. history—and remains the champion of equality to this day.

This is a story about a mixed race baby that was adopted by a rich white family, had everything handed to him. Then, one day, the 49ers coach didn’t cater to him, so he got mad. He thought of a good way to draw attention to himself. He took a knee during the anthem, said it was , because blacks were being oppressed. He got himself a nice contract with Nike and his speaking out about oppression ended. The End

This is certainly NOT the American history I was taught...!! and this is from a TEACHER..??

From someone who teaches AP US History:

If you are confused as to why so many Americans are defending the confederate flag, monuments, and statues right now, I put together a quick Q&A, with questions from a hypothetical person with misconceptions and answers from my perspective as an AP U.S. History Teacher:

Q: What did the Confederacy stand for?

A: Rather than interpreting, let's go directly to the words of the Confederacy's Vice President, Alexander Stephens. In his "Cornerstone Speech" on March 21, 1861, he stated "The Constitution... rested upon the equality of races. This was an error. Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

Q: But people keep saying heritage, not hate! They think the purpose of the flags and monuments are to honor confederate soldiers, right?

A: The vast majority of confederate flags flying over government buildings in the south were first put up in the 1960's during the Civil Rights Movement. So for the first hundred years after the Civil War ended, while relatives of those who fought in it were still alive, the confederate flag wasn't much of a symbol at all. But when Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis were marching on Washington to get the Civil Rights Act (1964) and Voting Rights Act (1965) passed, leaders in the south felt compelled to fly confederate flags and put up monuments to honor people who had no living family members and had fought in a war that ended a century ago. Their purpose in doing this was to exhibit their displeasure with black people fighting for basic human rights that were guaranteed to them in the 14th and 15th Amendments but being withheld by racist policies and practices.

Q: But if we take down confederate statues and monuments, how will we teach about and remember the past?

A: Monuments and statues pose little educational relevance, whereas museums, the rightful place for Confederate paraphernalia, can provide more educational opportunities for citizens to learn about our country's history. The Civil War is important to learn about, and will always loom large in social studies curriculum. Removing monuments from public places and putting them in museums also allows us to avoid celebrating and honoring people who believed that tens of millions of black Americans should be legal property.

Q: But what if the Confederate flag symbol means something different to me?

A: Individuals aren't able to change the meaning of symbols that have been defined by history. When I hang a Bucs flag outside my house, to me, the Bucs might represent the best team in the NFL, but to the outside world, they represent an awful NFL team, since they haven't won a playoff game in 18 years. I can't change that meaning for everyone who drives by my house because it has been established for the whole world to see. If a Confederate flag stands for generic rebellion or southern pride to you, your personal interpretation forfeits any meaning once you display it publicly, as its meaning takes on the meaning it earned when a failed regime killed hundreds of thousands of Americans in an attempt to destroy America and keep black people enslaved forever.

Q: But my uncle posted a meme that said the Civil War/Confederacy was about state's rights and not slavery?

A: "A state's right to what?" - John Green

Q: Everyone is offended about everything these days. Should we take everything down that offends anyone?

A: The Confederacy literally existed to go against the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the idea that black people are human beings that deserve to live freely. If that doesn't upset or offend you, you are un-American.

Q: Taking these down goes against the First Amendment and freedom of speech, right?

A: No. Anyone can do whatever they want on their private property, on their social media, etc. Taking these down in public, or having private corporations like NASCAR ban them on their properties, has literally nothing to do with the Bill of Rights.

Q: How can people claim to be patriotic while supporting a flag that stood for a group of insurgent failures who tried to permanently destroy America and killed 300,000 Americans in the process?

A: No clue.

Q: So if I made a confederate flag my profile picture, or put a confederate bumper sticker on my car, what am I declaring to my friends, family, and the world?

A: That you support the Confederacy. To recap, the Confederacy stands for: slavery, white supremacy, treason, failure, and a desire to permanently destroy Selective history as it supports white supremacy.

It’s no accident that:

You learned about Helen Keller instead of W.E.B, DuBois

You learned about the Watts and L.A. Riots, but not Tulsa or Wilmington.

You learned that George Washington’s dentures were made from wood, rather than the teeth from slaves.

You learned about black ghettos, but not about Black Wall Street.

You learned about the New Deal, but not “red lining.”

You learned about Tommie Smith’s fist in the air at the 1968 Olympics, but not that he was sent home the next day and stripped of his medals.

You learned about “black crime,” but white criminals were never lumped together and discussed in terms of their race.

You learned about “states rights” as the cause of the Civil War, but not that slavery was mentioned 80 times in the articles of secession.

Privilege is having history rewritten so that you don’t have to acknowledge uncomfortable facts.

Racism is perpetuated by people who refuse to learn or acknowledge this reality.

You have a choice. - Jim Golden

‘How Could the CDC Make That Mistake?’

The government’s disease-fighting agency is conflating viral and antibody tests, compromising a few crucial metrics that governors depend on to reopen their economies. Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, and other states are doing the same. MAY 21, 2020

Editor’s Note: The Atlantic is making vital coverage of the coronavirus available to all readers. Find the collection here.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conflating the results of two different types of coronavirus tests, distorting several important metrics and providing the country with an inaccurate picture of the state of the pandemic. We’ve learned that the CDC is making, at best, a debilitating mistake: combining test results that diagnose current coronavirus infections with test results that measure whether someone has ever had the virus. The upshot is that the government’s disease-fighting agency is overstating the country’s ability to test people who are sick with COVID-19. The agency confirmed to The Atlantic on Wednesday that it is mixing the results of viral and antibody tests, even though the two tests reveal different information and are used for different reasons.

This is not merely a technical error. States have set quantitative guidelines for reopening their economies based on these flawed data points.

Several states—including Pennsylvania, the site of one of the country’s largest outbreaks, as well as Texas, Georgia, and Vermont—are blending the data in the same way. Virginia likewise mixed viral and antibody test results until last week, but it reversed course and the governor apologized for the practice after it was covered by the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Atlantic. Maine similarly separated its data on Wednesday; Vermont authorities claimed they didn’t even know they were doing this.

The widespread use of the practice means that it remains difficult to know exactly how much the country’s ability to test people who are actively sick with COVID-19 has improved.

Police Officer Mocks ‘Defund The Police’ Protesters After They Request Security
By Rusty Weiss June 29, 2020 3:16PM

A viral video posted to TikTok this past weekend shows an officer having a good laugh over a group of ‘defund the police’ protesters requesting security for their event.
The officer, whose badge is not visible in the video, can hardly contain his smile as he points out the irony.
“So I come in this morning and we’re informed there’s going to be a protest to ‘defund the police.’ Well, that’s fine, I like protests,” he says into the camera.
“Except they requested a police presence. You know, for their safety … at the ‘defund the police’ event,” he reiterates.
Finally, he says, “I s*** you not.”
“They requested a police presence, you know, for their safety at the ‘defund the police’ event.”

Obama's Worst Nightmare Comes True — Lindsey Graham Sending Subpoenas..... About time....CHARGE THEM ALL...!!

Report: Senate Judiciary Committee Will Call Comey, McCabe, Brennan, And Clapper As Witnesses   June 29, 2020  Martin Walsh

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham announced this week that his committee will hold his first hearing into the origins of the Russia hoax next week.

During an interview Thursday on Hugh Hewitt’s nationally syndicated radio show, Graham revealed the names of 4 top Obama-era officials that he plans to call to testify before his committee.

Among those are former FBI Director James Comey, former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Graham added he did not know if former National Security Advisor Susan Rice and former Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes would be called to testify before his committee but said he was deferring to GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, to investigate matters pertaining to the period between the 2016 presidential election and inauguration.

Below is a partial transcript of Graham and Hewitt’s exchange:

HEWITT: Now I have a series of questions. I just would like to know yes, no, I don’t know as to whether or not you will be calling as a witness to the Judiciary Committee the following people. Will you be subpoenaing James Comey?

GRAHAM: Yes.

HEWITT: Andrew McCabe?

GRAHAM: Yes.

HEWITT: John Brennan?

GRAHAM: Yes.

HEWITT: James Clapper?

GRAHAM: Yes.

HEWITT: Susan Rice?

GRAHAM: Don’t know.

HEWITT: Ben Rhodes?

GRAHAM: Don’t know. I’m having, Senator Johnson’s going to look at all the things that happened from the election to transition. His committee’s going to look at all that.

Earlier this week, Graham said former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will be the first witness to testify in the Russia probe hearing next week.

Graham’s committee is looking into the origins of the Trump-Russia probe and seeking to determine whether any laws were broken when Obama’s FBI and DOJ spied on members of the Trump campaign and investigation alleged “collusion.”

Earlier this month, the Department of Justice filed to dismiss its criminal case against former White House national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn after newly revealed documents surfaced.

In the newly released documents, we learned that the FBI had drawn up paperwork to close the case against Flynn, but fired agent Peter Strzok made a last-minute move to keep it open.

Strzok was fired for sending countless anti-Trump text messages to Lisa Page, a former FBI lawyer with whom he was having an affair.

Strzok played a critical role in going after Flynn, the new documents reveal.

Handwritten notes from the FBI — which we withheld from Flynn’s defense team for years — show that a key goal of the agents investigating Flynn was “to get him to lie so we can prosecute him or get him fired.
