He was born Warren Wilhelm, Jr., then changed his name to De Blasio in 2001. He went to Nicaragua in 1988 and became an ardent supporter of the Marxist–Leninist government there, the Sandinista National Liberation Front, which was opposed by the Reagan administration at the time. After returning from Nicaragua, he moved to New York City, continued to support the Sandinistas, and joined a group called the Nicaragua Solidarity Network which held meetings and fundraisers for the Sandinista political party. In 2001, de Blasio decided to run for the New York City Council's 39th district and changed his name. He is slippery Mayor De Blasio now.
