A school in Nebraska told a 3-year-old deaf student that he must change the way he signs his name because it looks too similar to “gun” – a gesture that violates the school’s weapons policy.
Hunter Spanjer’s personalized name sign was registered with Signing Exact English (SEE), a form of American Sign Language. The sign requires an extended index finger, similar to a gun sign, but is otherwise completely different. The nuances of finger placement in sign are essential.
Grand Island School officials said the “Weapons in Schools” Board Policy 8470 forbids “any instrument … that looks like a weapon.”
“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” said Hunter’s father, Brian Spanjer. “It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through SEE.”
Hunter was asked to change the way he signs his name in August 2012. Now his parents expect the National Association for the Deaf to weigh in on the matter. They believe their son has a right to sign his namehis way.
“We are working with the parents to come to the best solution we can for the child,” said Jack Sheard, a Grand Island Public Schools spokesperson.
Other Grand Islanders disputed the school’s claim.
"It's his name," said Grand Island resident Dana Schwieger. "It's not like he's going to bring a gun to school when he's 3 years old."

The mainstream media is barely covering this story, but it is of utmost importance. What began as a quiet protest last week in Taksim Square against the razing of one of the last green parks in Istanbul turned horribly violent as police fired tear gas and aimed water cannons against peaceful protestors. One death and a number of blindings were reported.
What followed was a nationwide uprising against the anti-democratic rule of Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan as police brutality became a symbol and rallying point against an increasingly unpopular government. This regime has, bit by bit, stripped away the rights and liberties of its people. Despite promising respect for democratic principles, Erdogan has held a tight grip on media and clamped down on the opposition. During the protests over the past five days, state-run media instead ran story after story on Miss Turkey and “the world’s ugliest cat.”
Social media was said to have been the galvanizing force behind the uprisings in places like Iran and Egypt, and so it is no surprise that the Turkish government is now seeking to silence platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. After protests began, the authorities severed access to these popular social media sites, hoping that word of what had transpired would not get out. Even the Western media, which appears to have fallen well short of its obligation to report the truth, remains curiously silent, as if dependent on social media to gauge newsworthiness.

UNITED NATIONS (TheBlaze/AP) — More than 60 countries signed the landmark treaty regulating the multibillion-dollar global arms trade Monday and the United States announced it will sign soon, giving a strong kickoff to the first major international anti-gun campaign. The global body claims the treaty will help stem the illicit trade in weapons that fuel conflicts and extremists.Theannouncement by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry that the U.S. – the world’s largest arms dealer – will sign is critical to the treaty’s passage, but the measure’s ultimate strength rests on support by all major arms exporters and importers. While the treaty was overwhelmingly approved on April 2 by the U.N. General Assembly, key arms exporters including Russia and China and major importers including India, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Egypt abstained and have given no indication yet that they will sign it.
Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have opposed the treaty over concerns it could lead to new gun control measures in the United States.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama is concerned by
excessive spending by the Internal Revenue Service and other agencies on
conferences and travel.
White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama has taken already taken action to
reduce spending. He's pointing out that Obama installed new IRS leadership after
the agency acknowledged it had unfairly targeted conservative groups.
An inspector general's report set to be released Tuesday is expected to say
the IRS spent about $50 million to hold at least 220 conferences for employees
between 2010 and 2012.
On Sunday, the Republican chairman of the House's Oversight committee, Rep.
Darrell Issa, called Carney a "paid liar" over comments that referred to
misconduct by IRS workers in Cincinnati. Carney says he's not interested in
getting into a back-and-forth with Issa.

Friday a White House press release was inadvertently distributed early to news organizations announcing that President Barack Hussein Obama had signed an executive order giving himself a pay raise to $500,000 annually.
White House staff failed to squash the story as the press release was intended to be distributed late in the day on Friday, after the deadline when most news agencies are able to publish breaking ... news stories.
Critics of the President’s executive order say the move makes Obama seem “politically tone deaf” because he gave himself a raise at a time when the federal government is arbitrarily cutting services and benefits due to sequestration.
Presidential pay raises are usually approved by Congress, the last increase being authorized by both Congress and Bill Clinton in 1999 and went into effect in 2001.
The Presidential pay raise also now includes a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account and $19,000 for entertainment.
