Riley Cooper apologized via Twitter on Wednesday for a racist comment that went viral across the internet.
“I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself,” he wrote. “I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, to Jeffrey Lurie, to Howie Roseman and to my teammates.
“I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences.”
The team released the same statement from Cooper, who is expected to address reporters sometime tonight.
It’s unknown if the team will take any disciplinary action against Cooper, a former University of Florida standout and a former college roommate of Tim Tebow.
On Wednesday, a video surfaced on the website Crossingbroad.com [video] in which Cooper used a racial slur in a threatening statement against African Americans.
The incident occurred at a Kenny Chesney concert in June at Lincoln Financial Field. The video shows an irate Cooper, a native of Clearwater, Fla., make the following remark: "I will jump that fence and fight every n------ here."
It’s unclear in the video whom Cooper’s racial slur is directed at and the cause of his apparent anger.
Cooper had become a major storyline since Saturday, when starting wideout Jeremy Maclin was lost for the season with an ACL tear. Cooper is one of several receivers bidding to replace Maclin in the lineup
