New York Times: Christians Are To Blame For Coronavirus Outbreak Posted March 27, 2020 in Politics
On Friday, the New York Times released an op-ed written by journalist Katherine Stewart that blamed religious voters, primarily Christians, for the coronavirus outbreak.
Stewart argues that the religious voters who support President Trump encourage governance that doesn't pay attention to science.
In the op-ed, titled “The Road to Coronavirus Hell Was Paved by Evangelicals,” Stewart writes:
Donald Trump rose to power with the determined assistance of a movement that denies science, bashes government and prioritized loyalty over professional expertise. In the current crisis, we are all reaping what that movement has sown.
At least since the 19th century, when the proslavery theologian Robert Lewis Dabney attacked the physical sciences as “theories of unbelief,” hostility to science has characterized the more extreme forms of religious nationalism in the United States.
The far-left journalist continues by quoting pastors who refused to close down churches at the beginning of the outbreak.
Stewart said: “By all accounts, President Trump’s tendency to trust his gut over the experts on issues like vaccines and climate change does not come from any deep-seated religious conviction.”
She added: “But he is perfectly in tune with the religious nationalists who form the core of his base.”

Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, Trump has repeatedly deferred to scientists, doctors and experts in the administration — particularly Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Debbie Birx, who feature in his daily press briefings.
Notably, scientists have confirmed that President Trump’s travel bans on China and Europe slowed and limited the spread of the disease in the United States. In Fauci’s case, he specifically urged the travel ban be imposed on Europe.
All of the Democratic candidates for president opposed those bans.
Former Vice President Joe Biden called the China ban “hysterical” and xenophobic, and panned the Europe ban after Trump announced it.
What Stewart failed to mention is that many prominent Democratic leaders failed to take precautions to stop the coronavirus outbreak in America. One example is New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio who actually encouraged New Yorkers to go "out on the town."
In early March, de Blasio encouraged the citizens of New York to go about their normal lives and "get out on the town despite coronavirus."
“Since I’m encouraging New Yorkers to go on with your lives + get out on the town despite Coronavirus,” de Blasio tweeted on March 2nd.
Instead of social distancing, de Blasio encouraged the people of New York to go to movies.
“I thought I would offer some suggestions. Here’s the first: thru Thurs 3/5 go see “The Traitor,” he said on Twitter while referring to a new crime drama.
