On Thursday, Joe Biden gave his first press conference which he spent discussing the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
He essentially blamed everything on President Donald Trump. In particular, he blamed his predecessor for “dismantling” all of the detention infrastructures that are so desperately needed right now due to a new influx of migrants.
Two things:
— The Trump administration closed those facilities because Trump’s tough enforcement policies worked and they were no longer needed.
— Those policies included returning migrants to their home countries, ending family separation, striking agreements with Central American countries to require their citizens to apply for asylum at home, not at the U.S. border; and the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
— In addition, Trump threatened to cut off aid to the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras if their governments did not do more to control their own borders.
Biden ended all of those policies and agreements no sooner than he sat behind the Resolute Desk, where his handlers had a stack of executive orders waiting for him to sign. And he gladly did.
Now that the situation, predictably, is out of control along the border again — migrants have said they are returning to the U.S. and crossing illegally because they knew Biden changed Trump’s policies — the president has handed the problem off to his replacement-in-waiting, Kamala Harris, with these very bizarre, but very understandable instructions: Be more like Trump.
“The Vice President agreed … agreed to lead our diplomatic effort and work with those nations to accept returnees, and enhanced migration enforcement at their borders — at their borders,” Biden said in an afternoon press conference [emphasis added]. “We’re already talking to Mexico about that,” he revealed.
The VP will work with “the countries that need help in stemming the movement of so many folks, stemming the migration to our southern border,” Biden explained.
Breitbart News reports:
President Joe Biden directed Vice-President Kamala Harris on Wednesday to get the Mexican and Central American governments to forcibly block poor migrants moving towards the United States. …
The shift marks a rhetorical turnaround for the administration, which used its first days in office to demolish the multiple layers of border protections created by President Donald Trump. Those protections included diplomatic agreements with Central American countries, plus the Remain in Mexico policy that allowed the U.S. to keep migrants out of U.S. jobs while waiting for asylum claims to be processed by U.S. courts.
“I look forward to engaging in diplomacy with government, with private sector, with civil society and the leaders of each in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, to strengthen democracy and the rule of law, and ensure shared prosperity in the region,” Harris said after Biden handed his mess off to her.
That’s good; maybe her first phone call should be to the former president she and her boss love to vilify. He can fill her on all the details.
Meantime, the migrant families and children are continuing to stream towards the U.S., allowing Mexican cartels to get richer and the Central American countries to lose more and more of their own skilled labor and population base.
What a disaster.
