The Associated Press via Fox News is reporting that a group of Democratic Senators lead by Senators Harry Reid (D-NV) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell urging him to change the name of the Washington Redskins.
“We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports,” they wrote.
They’re presumably referring to the Donald Sterling fiasco. Apparently, everything is as racist as that these days.
“Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C., football team mocks their culture,” they wrote.
Yeah, the NFL has nothing better to do than mock their culture. Are they serious?
“The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” they wrote.
How about letting fans decide for themselves?
And just like Slate, they did not refer to the team by its name. How clever!
But the NFL isn’t backing down.
“The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image,” NFL Spokesman Brian McCarthy wrote in response to the letter. “The name is not used by the team or the NFL in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.”
Wait, a league that received an “A” in its racial hiring practices and in which over two-thirds of the players are minorities isn’t racist? How could that be?
Meanwhile, there’s no word of a letter being sent to Notre Dame about its team name, the “Fighting Irish.” They must be foaming at the mouth over this controversial stereotype, right?
