A billboard in Chicago along I-55 shows the image of a baseball mitt, an apple pie, and an AR-15 rifle. Under the images are the words, "Pure American." The actual billboard is owned by Lamar Advertising and the AR-15 advertisement was paid for by "Texas-based rifle-parts company Slide Solutions."
According to the Chicago Tribune, the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA) complained about the billboard on Facebook and asked Lamar Advertising to take it down. But Lamar Advertising said no. Their vice president of governmental relations Hal Kilshaw explained: "We try not to run copy that's offensive, but the standard can't mean it can't offend anyone. (Otherwise), we wouldn't be able to run a McDonald's ad because some people think McDonald's products are unhealthy."
Kilshaw said the billboard advertises "a legal product" and that Slide Fire Solutions "has a First Amendment right to try to sell [its] product."
