Authorities in Xenia Township are scrambling to corral more than 2,000 pigs Monday after a semi-trailer crashed on a highway in the southwest Ohio community, reports say.
The Dayton Daily News reports an estimated 2,200 piglets were on the trailer, which overturned on U.S. 35 West at about 7 p.m. About 200 piglets were killed.
The driver of the truck was not injured, but a female passenger was taken to the hospital.
Fox19.com reports the piglets scattered into a wooded area near the highway. Volunteers are helping law-enforcement and fire department officials gather the animals. Area farmers also are providing trailers to transport the animals.
The piglets are being taken to the Greene County Fairgrounds to be given water.
The crash forced the closure of a section of the highway as the piglets were gathered.
