Obama warns Putin against intervening in Syria
While on an official visit to Paris for a climate change conference, U.S. President Obama warned Russian President Vladimir Putin against intervening in Syria.
“I think Mr. Putin understands that… with Afghanistan fresh in the memory, for him to simply get bogged down in an inconclusive and paralyzing civil conflict is not the outcome that he’s looking for,” Obama said.
While U.S. troops are currently involved in the Syrian crisis, the Russian President recently announced he was sending 150,000 troops to the war-torn nation in order to combat ISIS and Syrian rebels.Meanwhile, following on the Turkish military downing a Russian fighter jet that had crossed over into its air space, the Turkish navy implemented a blockade of the Dardanelles and the Strait of Bosporus.
The Free Syrian Army reportedly uploaded a video showing the killing of Russian troops parachuting out of the struck fighter jet, and destroying a Russian rescue helicopter with a U.S.-made TOW missile.
President Obama’s comments are an escalation of a war of words exchanged between the U.S. and Russian presidents that has ensued since Vladimir Putin intervened into Ukraine. It appears that the scolding didn’t strongly influence the Russian president’s calculus or behavior.
If the Russians continue backing the Assad regime against the Syrian rebels, while making cosmetic air strikes against ISIS, there is a danger of U.S. troops being caught in the crossfire. The White House recently suspended its program of arming and training Syrian rebels.
The danger for American troops is that the U.S. is dragged into an inconclusive proxy war with no clear definition of victor
