In an increasingly dull world, one coffee stand owner decided to spice things up a bit with scantily clad baristas serving overpriced cups of coffee. Customers of Carmela Panico’s Java Juggs Espresso in Everett, Washington could get more than cream and Sweet N Low with their morning brew; the girls were also serving the customers a side of sex appeal. Whilst this appears to be a good business plan on the surface, Ms. Panico allegedly also had the girls performing sex acts for money which, in the state of Washington, remains illegal.
What seemed to be a win-win for both employees and customers alike, has turned into the scandal of the month. Some girls reported making over six figures per year, mostly from tips, by shaking their stuff over a cappuccino machine. This, among other factors, tipped off authorities that perhaps more than just coffee was being made at the shop. Had the girls just been dressed for sexiness, all would have been good. However, when the prostitution line is crossed, scores of legal [not to mention sanitary] problems arise. Add to that the allegation of fraudulent tax reporting and it was only a matter of time before the government caught up with it.
