Trump: Democrats the Party of 'Slavery'
Donald Trump, pressing an effort to woo traditionally Democratic voting black and Hispanic voters, is portraying the party as one tied to a notorious history of slavery and segregation.
The Washington Post reports the GOP nominee, on the stump in the state of Washington Tuesday night, argued no group has suffered more under Hillary Clinton's policies than African-Americans.
"The Republican Party is the party of Abraham Lincoln. Not bad, not bad," he told a rally in the Seattle suburb of Everett, the Post reports. "It's also the party of freedom, equality and opportunity."
"It is the Democratic Party that is the party of slavery, the party of Jim Crow, and the party of opposition."
According to the Post, the word "oppression," not "opposition," appeared in the prepared remarks from which Trump was reading.
"Tonight, I am asking for the vote of every African American and Hispanic citizen in this country who wants to see a better future," he said.
Trump's effort to tie Clinton to Democratic policies that hurt African American communities — and his charge that she is a "bigot"— have come under fire.
But his campaign team is lauding the outreach.
And though Washington state has been solidly blue, Trump is predicting victory there, the Post reports.
"We are going to work every hard over the next 70 days and we're going to win this state," he declared, the newspaper reports.
