A 911 call came in at about 1 p.m. PDT reporting the attack about 2 miles from Pichetti Winery near Cupertino, Stenderup said.
"We don't know the exact circumstances of the attack," Stenderup said, adding that investigators were still gathering information.
Trails in the area have been closed. The boy and his family were hiking on land owned by the MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District, which buys and protects land in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The sheriff's department and California Department of Fish and Wildlife will look for the mountain lion until sunset, Stenderup said.
